Our starting recommendation is the smaller Pro if you want the new camera controls without automatically choosing the largest phone. Try its size first: a phone you can comfortably carry and use is more valuable than a specification you rarely notice.
An iPhone 17 Pro owner should not feel pushed into an upgrade. Wait for independent camera tests, and compare the cost of keeping your current phone with a SIM-only plan. The new aperture needs to improve photos you actually take to justify the spend.

Compare the handset plus a SIM-only plan with a network provider’s total contract cost. Include upfront payments, separate device and airtime terms, and stated price rises. Do not compare a handset-finance payment with a bill that also includes airtime.

What aperture meansThe opening inside the main lens can change size. Both Pro models offer four settings, from f/1.48 to f/4.0. Opening it wider lets in more light; stopping down can bring more of a scene into focus. Camera specifications
That is more useful to understand than simply hearing “better camera”. It gives photographers another choice, but it does not guarantee a sharper picture of a moving child or a cleaner night shot. Those are things to test.

Apple claims up to 40% faster GPU performance than A19 Pro and a redesigned vapour chamber with three times the previous generation’s surface area. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not our benchmarks. Apple launch claims
A bigger cooling system matters when a game, video export or recording session runs for a while. It does not mean every everyday task becomes 40% faster, or that the phone never feels warm.
For most buyers, the sensible test is whether the extra performance improves something their current phone struggles with. We would not replace a smoothly running phone for a chip name alone.

The quoted video gain is three hours over the UK iPhone 17 Pro, while weight rises by 7g. That is a useful specification improvement, not proof that every user gets three extra hours between charges.
UK models retain a nano-SIM tray. Do not substitute the higher battery figures Apple gives for eSIM-only versions sold in some other markets.
Apple quotes up to 50% charge in around 15 minutes with a suitable 60W-capable or higher USB-C adapter supporting AVS, sold separately. That is an adapter requirement, not a claim of constant 60W charging. Charging conditions

The camera is the reason to investigate an upgrade; the unchanged display size is a reason not to expect a completely different everyday experience. A battery replacement or cheaper SIM-only deal may be the better answer if your current phone otherwise works well.

Apple lists its C2 modem for the Pro. Coverage and speed still depend on your network provider, location and congestion.
The smaller display is the practical choice if you often type one-handed or keep your phone in a trouser pocket. Check text size and keyboard comfort in person rather than buying a bigger screen by default.

Should I choose the Pro or Pro Max?

Can I use a physical SIM in the UK model?
Yes. Apple lists nano-SIM and eSIM support for the UK models. Check the exact regional version when importing a phone; other markets sell eSIM-only versions. UK SIM details
